Fixed Memory

These drawings evolved from my curiosity about how and why groups and individuals shape identities through narratives. The narratives often use a similar collection of elements, such as heroes, villains, language, history and culture, to generate stories that are intended to be read as truth. These truths serve to both create, and preserve a desired identity. Similarly, as a visual artist, I have created an identity or narrative for the work I make, and by extension, myself, that is comprised of a collection of marks, signs, and images.

My intention with this series is to use these collected inventions in shaping and reconstructing the existing stories to see where they will go. I am interested specifically in unraveling my cultural and familial narratives that appear to share a similar impetus for their creation. In constructing a new narrative I think about erasure, revision and transparency as elements that can create a visual object as well as a story.
