“The more clearly we can focus our attention
on the wonders and realities of the universe about us,
the less taste we shall have for destruction.”
-Rachel Carson
Opening July 21, 2007, the West Branch Gallery & Sculpture Park presents an art exhibition featuring works in which artists consider the relationship of humans to the environment. Twenty-one exhibiting artists implement beauty, creativity, and artistic process in the search for solutions to pressing global issues. Their works range from small paintings to large-scale sculptures, and focus on our human connection to the earth. Visitors accustomed to the scientific and political debate will encounter diverse artistic perspectives on controversial ecological issues. By including artists’ insights in the dialogue, the exhibit brings new energy and creativity to address the changing environment we share.
John K. Grande, an internationally known art historian, will be the evening’s keynote speaker. His comments will begin at 6:45 pm, and will be followed by a brief question and answer period. Grande’s extensive writings have focused on the relationship of art and the environment. Each of his four books address creativity as a constructive tool for positive action. His comments will connect the works on view to the increasingly urgent debate over global issues.
The opening reception for this show takes place July 21, 2007 from 6pm - 9pm. Gallery hours are 11-6 every day except Monday and Tuesday and by appointment. Please contact gallery coordinator Amy Rahn for more details by phone at 802.253.8943 or by email at amy@stowevt.net.
The exhibit seeks to facilitate a more diverse and fruitful discussion of our human mark on the earth and possibilities for the earth to thrive in the future.
